Recipe Weekend: Homemade Cough Lozenges

Recipe Weekend: Homemade Cough Lozenges

In honor of our spotlight on slippery elm bark yesterday, Maddie’s sweet daughter Wren developed a nighttime cough. Not a little one either, but the kind that wracks their little bodies and keeps them --and you -- fitfully awake. Allergies are high right now, her eczema has been flaring. In the system of Chinese Medicine, these symptoms together make perfect sense. Eastern medicine considers the skin, the nasal passages and the lungs to be part of the same organ ‘system’ of the Lungs, an inherent logic as all of these body parts open to and interact with the outside world in protective and intimate ways, all being involved in the process of breathing. This is seen in the correlation we often see as practitioners between eczema and asthma. Chinese medicine also looks to large intestine health when the lung system falls out of balance -- another system that opens to the outside world so to speak, and protects us in the sense that it takes anything the body doesn’t need or cannot use, and escorts it to the exits. As a practitioner, when a child has eczema, rash, asthma, cough or any respiratory disorder, I make it a priority to ensure that the bowels move freely, escorting any toxins to the exits.

Slippery elm bark to the rescue again, as it addresses all of the systems involved simultaneously -- the skin, lungs, nasal passages and intestines. slippery elm bark, recipe, lozenges, natural remedies, remedy, coughAll of this as a long way of saying, when Maddie reached for the slippery elm this morning in preparation for another nighttime coughing fit, she was intuitively supporting every system where her daughter needed extra support -- AND, by modifying a great recipe for slippery elm bark powder lozenges from Recipes to Nourish, she turned the medicine into a little sweet treat as well - something like a truffle. Supporting AND delicious -- isn’t that the magic of mamas for which we all strive?

Here’s the magic slippery elm truffle recipe Maddie made that will hopefully ensure her and her family a peaceful night’s sleep tonight. The honey is antimicrobial, killing unwanted invaders that might be provoking the cough or respiratory infection. Cocoa powder is a powerful source of antioxidants -- you can even take it up a notch with raw cacao. Or, if chocolate keeps your child awake, feel free to omit entirely, filling in with an extra teaspoon of the slippery elm. With possible antibacterial and antifungal properties, cinnamon has long been used in Chinese Medicine to warm the body and treat respiratory ailments. And finally, feel free to get fancy and add a couple of drops of pure vanilla extract or orange extract for extra yum factor, or even a couple drops of tinctured echinacea for an added boost of immune support.

Magic Slippery Elm Truffle Balls (aka homemade cough lozenges)slippery, elm, bark, powder, recipe, cough, remedies

  • 1 Tbls slipper elm bark powder (about 15 capsules if you buy it this way)
  • 1 tsp cocoa powder
  • 1/8 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp honey (substitute maple syrup for children under 15 months old)

I coated my hands in flax seed oil and rolled them into little balls about 1/4 tsp sized. This makes 6 lozenges. Let these dry out up to 24 hours. You can use a dehydrater or the lowest teperature on your oven to speed the drying process up.
